DOL Guidance On Fiduciary Rule Does Little To Clarify Ambiguities

Tuesday, November 1, 2016

The Department of Labor (DOL) issued new fiduciary rule guidance in the form of 34 frequently-asked questions, which focus primarily on the best interest contract exemption, grandfather issues, and some compensation issues.

This is the first in a series of three FAQs the DOL has said it will issue. The current FAQ explains that new money can be invested to an established portfolio without negating the DOL rule’s grandfather clause, and that selling an asset will not negate the grandfather provision unless there is an advisor makes a recommendation to purchase a new asset that would result in new compensation.

Otherwise, however, the FAQ lacks significant clarity or simply restates what is in the rule and its preamble.  NAIFA hopes that future guidance from DOL will address remaining ambiguities.

Happy Holidays from NAIFA Seattle/Eastside

Thursday, December 22, 2011

Wishing you every happiness this Holiday Season and prosperity in the New Year.  Thank you for being a member of NAIFA.  We look forward to continuing the work of supporting our profession in the coming year and we hope you'll join us in those efforts.

David Leslie Knode (January 24, 1952 - October 21, 2011)
It is with a heavy heart that we share with you the passing of one of our own. David Knode passed away on Friday after a bout with pneumonia having stopped chemotherapy in August. According to David's brother, David's wife "Keiko was always by his side, comforting, encouraging and supporting him. David's strength, courage, and perseverance never wavered." David is a past president of NAIFA Seattle/Eastside and was a fixture at many of our events over his 12 years of membership.  He is survived by his loving wife Keiko, daughter Sayoko, son Anthony, sister Sharon, and many other family members and friends. He will be dearly missed.

Plans are being made for a Celebration of Life to be held at 2:00pm, November 12 at Grace Lutheran Church in Bellevue and later in MN where Dave's ashes will be placed in the LeRoy Lutheran Cemetery.  You can read his obituary here.  Additional photos of David and his family are available here.

New Events Format Adopted

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Continuing discussions from the annual planning meeting in June the Board of Directors has unanimously adopted a new format and schedule for general membership meetings.  Beginning with the 2011-12 NAIFA year there will no longer be monthly breakfast meetings.  Instead the board will produce four, value-added, larger events with two or three speakers each rather than a single speaker once per month.  The Programs Committee, chaired by new board member Jody Lentz, is pursuing more engaging, dynamic, and diverse content to add more value to our members with fewer dates to attend.  With raising the bar on quality and content of these events comes increased expense.  The majority of the cost of these events will still be covered by the local portion of your dues but to provide this enhanced programming we will be collecting $15/member and $25/non-member for each main  event (excluding MDRT Day).  If you would like to participate in developing these events by joining the Programs Committee please contact Jody at (206) 390-2760 or jlentz@financialguide.com.
